How i constructed the FrontPage and Contents Page

In order to construct my FrontPage the first thing that i did is that i done a research to find out what my audience would like to see inside their college magazine, this is what made me decide what was going to be in my magazine. Then i gave out my surveys to various of people, after I got surveys back i drew up the results into graphs so that it is easier for me to see what i should put in my magazine. Then i done 10 different Front Cover drafts to help give me ideas on what my Front cover should look like. After choosing the draft i wanted my FrontCover to look like, i went onto the computer and used a software called Adobe Photoshop. In this programme i opened the medium-close up shot that i took ealier on and i started editing this image so that the skin tone was level and that spots and moles were removed. After editing my image i started using the text tool to start entering text. I used a big size font to write my Masthead and a smaller size to write my cover lines. After entering all the text my FrontCover was done.

In my frontcover i have three strengths and these are:
1) The Masthead is well designed and its big enough so that it is eas and clear to read. This means that the masthead is very visible.
2)The Medium-close up shot that i took matched the standards of the medium close up shot that i was supposed to take.
3)I used good coverlines, this helps attract readers to read the magazine.

My frontcover also has its weaknesses and these are:
1) The Model in my picture looks to serious and he should cool down a little and look more natural as if hes happy to be taken a photo of.
2) The Font colour used is to bright so that the text is harder to read.
3)The Font size of some coverlines are to small so its hard to read.

In Order to construct my contents page i had to do 3 drafts to help me decide which one i was going to choose. After deciding which 1 i was going to use i used photoshop to create a background then started entering text and pictures. After doing this i used Adobe illustrator to create a shape so that i can use it in my contents page. Once this was all done my contents page was done.

The strengths of my contents page are:
1)The design of it is nice with the faddy background.
2)Easy to read.
3)Good use of images

The Weaknesses of my contents page are:
1)The contents page is to plain
2)Contents page is not attractive
3)Another image should have been added of the college.

Contents Page

Contents Page

This is my contents page to my magazine that i have created. This page shows what is going to be inside my magazine. First i had to put a fading black background then i inserted the text then enlarging it making it visible to see then i inserted the images along with the Christ The King logo.

Contents Page (Drafts)

These are my drafts for my contents page, i had done these drafts to help me have a image of what my completed contents page would look like. I have done 3 drafts on the contents page and i have chosen 1 of them to use.

1)

2)

3)

Out of all these 3 i chose to choose the first draft because i feel that the layout is very clear and easy to understand.

Front Cover (Final)

Final Front Cover

This is my final copy of my front cover. After drafting 10 different front covers i chose to use this design. I felt tthat this design is very clear and easy to understand. Choosing from 10 different designs was kind of hard as there was also other designs that i wanted to use however this one was the most appealing to me.

Taking The Photograph

Taking the photographs

I took two different pictures of my model and the look that I was looking for is a sort of serious pupil at school, and when the image is looked at it gives the impression of seriousness and someone who is determined to school. The first picture that I took was of my model next to a computer sort of leaning towards the computer and doing work, this picture gives the effect of a hard working pupil a college. For this picture the only props that were used were the props inside the IT room which includes the desk, computer, monitor and sheets of paper which the pupil is working on. Make-up was not used due to I felt that my model didn’t need any make-up. There was also no costume that was used; the clothing used was the models outfit for that day. The second picture I took was of my model standing up straight looking direct at the camera by doing this it helps create a serious effect. I choose to use this picture because out of both of my pictures this seemed to fit into the category more of a medium close up shot. Also this picture also had looked better and it seemed more of a picture appropriate for a college front cover magazine. For this picture the only Prop I had used was a AS Law book which was held by my model next to his chest to represent that he had been studying and it helps give a image of someone who is at a college. I didn’t feel that make up was necessary so I didn’t put make-up on my model also the costume used was the outfit my model was wearing for the day. By not dressing p my model it gives a modern feel to readers when they see the front cover as modern teens now dress in that certain way.

This is my first image. I didn't feel that this picture met the criteria of a medium close-up shot so i choose not to use this picture.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
After the image was edited in photoshop.

I chose to use this image because it represented the shot very well on what i intented to do. As you see from the first image to the second image, i have made the skin colour of my model more equal, this made the skin tone level so that there are no darker tones. Also i removed the spots and moles off of my model to give him a clearer skin.

In order for me to take my picture these are the following equipments that I had used:
· Canon Eos 400d Digital Camera
· Bowens Gemini Flash Unit with soft box
· Radio Trigger
Once my pictures were taken using the digital camera the photo was stored in a compact flash card so that I could use it to store onto my computer.

When using the equipment I was under my teacher’s supervision for health and safety reasons.

Frontcover (Drafts)

Front over Drafts

Before i could create my final covers i did 10 drafts to give me ideas on what my frontcover was going to look like and what im going to have on it. It took me a long time to think about what draft i wanted but after i drew 10 drafts i came up with the frontcover i had wanted.

Final Chosen Draft)

This is the final draft that i choose to create my final copy of my frontpage. Although i had used other details off of the other drafts i mainly used this sort of design to create my Front cover.

Audience Research (Results)

Audience Research – Result and Analysis

For this task I had to produce a survey, by doing this survey it gave me a basic idea of what people would like to see included in their college magazine in order for them to read the magazine. These are my results after collecting twenty sets of questionnaire.

1.
Out of the twenty people that done the questionnaire most of them were 16, there was also a couple of 17 year olds who had participated but there was no 18 year olds that was given this survey.

2.
My chart shows to me that I have given out my survey to more girls than boys therefore this magazine will probably be more appealing to girls. I should have considered and gave out my survey equally: 10 to boys and 10 girls.
3.

According to my bar chart most people in colleges don’t have their own school magazine. There are only a few people who had said yes that their college had a magazine.
4.

This chart shows to me that most people who had taken the survey would actually read their college magazine if the college had provided one. Only a few said no that they won’t read their college magazine if they had one.

5.

According to my result chart it shows to me that more people wish to see their magazine to be posted monthly instead of being posted weekly.

6.
This result bar chart shows to me that the people who had taken this survey clearly state that Music and Fashion were the popular choice that is wanted in the magazine. People also want to see sport in the magazine and only a small amount wanted other things included in the magazine.

7.
According to my results it clearly shows that RnB and Grime music was the popular music that has been chosen when doing my survey. The next two popular genres were pop and rock which have both the same percentage. Only a few requested other genres of music.

8.
This chart shows me that everyone who had taken my survey who feels that the picture of the front cover is most appealing to them, no one choose any other option. This will give me a good idea to choose an appropriate picture so that it is appealing to the audience.

9.
This shows to me that most people are willing to pay for the magazine at a price range of 50p-70p; the next favourite choice is getting the magazine for free.

10.
This was my last question and my results show to me that half of the people had wanted a comment box at the end of the magazine so that they can input suggestions and there is also the other which doesn’t feel like the magazine needs a comment page.
Conclusion
After doing a pie chart for each of my questions that was asked in the questionnaire it had gave me a good idea on what is required in a college magazine for people to be appealed to and people would pick it up to read. These results had told me that if colleges had provided college magazines most people would read it also people would also like the see the magazine to be published once a month. Most people also felt that in the magazine more of music and fashioned should be included alone with RnB and grime music. When the result was looked at it showed me everyone had felt that the most appealing thing to them of a front cover of a magazine is the picture. Finally there was a fair share of people who wanted a comment box at the end of the magazine for suggestions.

Pre-Production

Textual analysis of a college Magazine

This is an image of the front page of Guilford college magazine.

The denotation of this image is that we have got an image of a man possibly a student at the college in the air both hands up and legs bent back jumping up expressing he’s feeling. This shows me that the person is joyful and he’s happy about something. This also denotes to me that the student has freedom to do what he feel’s like. Also in the background it is an image of an ocean side, where the man is jumping into. When looking at the ocean it kind of makes people feel less stressed and it also allows people to see a good view. The camera shot used for the whole image is an extreme long shot taken from a low angle because we can clearly see the man’s whole body; this shows me that it is a long shot. I can also see the whole of the background.

On top of the image of the man we can see the masthead saying “Guilford college magazine” The font of this is in bright red this is trying to catch or attention, the author of this magazine is trying to target to people to read the masthead which shows to them what college is written from. By having it in red it really stands out and possibly the first thing a reader would look at is the masthead. Under the masthead there is also a dateline showing that the make of the magazine was in 2006. Also underneath the man that is jumping has white cover lines. The cover lines on this front cover are short and stand out in the image. This makes it easy for the reader to read.

The Masthead “Guilford College Magazine” is but in this large font size 18 and put in red to make it stand out, the way designed is like a typical magazine where the first letter of the word is bigger than the other which makes it stand out. Also Under this large red word “Guilford” there is this small white text that is in size 14 that says “news for alumni and friends” by having this it shows to me that the magazine is targeted at people who go to this college and also not only that it targets at friends of people who go college. The Sentence “Guilford College Magazine” basically explains itself as it is a magazine for college students at this college.

The Man diving off the cliff seems very relaxed and stress free. By adding the ocean background which sets a relaxing setting to readers. Also by having this sort of setting it appeals to readers as it got a nice view and some sort of low angle shot which makes the reader seem like there actually looking up at the man jumping in the air. Also at the bottom right hand corner there are three sentences, this shows to me that it indicates to readers in a brief way what is featured in the magazine and what is going to be found init.

Personally I feel the whole FrontPage of this magazine is very dull and plain this is because they have the Masthead which says “Guilford College magazine” is written just in a large font and in red, if the title was designed in more of a specific way then it will be more appealing to the audience and attract more people to read the magazine. Also the three sentences in the bottom right hand corner are in plain white size 14 writing which basically don’t help explain what is in the magazine, as it doesn’t specifically say the page or it doesn’t exactly say what is in the magazine. However if this magazine had more detail on the FrontPage and said clearly what is actually in the magazine then it will be more simple for reader’s. Also the magazine uses a very attractive peaceful background of a ocean and a cliff, this help relax the mind and make people feel more relaxed and appealed when looking at this FrontPage, however the colour of the background is very low key what is meant by this is that the background could be brighter so it’s clearer to see, by it being dark it is hard for the readers to see and it damages the image and the peacefulness of this cover.

The layout of this FrontPage is very well organised and clear to look at, as there is the Masthead at the top in the largest font out of the whole cover to make it stand out as it is the main point. Also there are the brief sentences at the bottom of the page indicating what’s in the magazine then as like normal magazine’s there is a big image of the ocean and a image of the man in the middle so that he is visible and he’s joy he’s able to be seen.
