Music Magazine Front Cover Drafts

Music Magazine Front Cover Drafts
The following are my drafts of my music Frontcover, each one i drew i felt like taking different ideas from however at the end of the whole process I had decided to use one of my drawings as my final front cover. By drawing these ideas, it gives me ideas of what i am going to be creating and these drawings will help me create my ideal front cover.

This is my first draft, this draft i went for a look that promotes new stars into the industry, as a close up shot will be used to show the stars face and the idea behind the masthead 'Exclusive' was to show that only this magazine will have the exclusive interviews with the new rising stars.

This is my second draft insead of going for the average music magazine style i went for a mmore unique style of arranging the masthead instead of just slapping it at the top. This design was created to sort of put all the text onto one side while the masthead seperates the image from the text by putting the masthead in the middle the images are seperated to one side.
This is my third draft, for this draft i went for the basic look and designed it as a typical music magazine front cover simply with the Masthead, a image and a few coverlines.

This is my fourth draft, in this draft i am going to have the masthead written in a certain way, i am going to make the masthead written in a gold font and making it shine as if it was a piece of gold so that it matches the masthead. I then have a image of a rap artist to also match the masthead along with little notes of the artist in this image i have chosen to use rap artist Papoose.

This is my fifth draft, instead going for rap artist style magazine, for this draft i created a Front cover that apply's to audience that like rock music more. For this front cover i have written the masthead in a appealing way also i snappeda image of a person playing the drums sort of showing the rock side of him or her.

This is my sixth draft for this draft i tried something different because instead of using simple coverlines showing whats inside the magazine, i changed it and i had written text that describes the image more.

This is my seventh draft for this draft i tried to advertise more of the well known artist and also i tried to advertise what sort of songs or albums that are coming soon.

This is my eighth draft of my front cover and also the last draft. After of deciding what to put onto my front cover i have finally decided to use thisfront cover that i have created for my final product. For this draft i am going to use the colours red, black and white. The background is going to be black while my two artist that i am going to use will be wearing vests adn standing next to each other to create a sort of power and showing to the audience they mean business. The writting used will be white and red. Im still considering if i am going to use these exact coverlines or i should use different coverlines. My final product will be targeted to people who are more interested in music such as RnB, Hip Hop and Rap. These audience will be targeted more because i found that people are more interested in these music after doing more audience research.

Music Magazine Results & Analysis

Audience Research – Result and Analysis

For this task I had to produce a survey, by doing this survey it gave me a basic idea of what people would like to see in a music magazine, these ideas will help me understand on what hold is put inside the magazine and how I should present it. After handing out my survey these are my results.

1.
Out of the twenty people that done the questionnaire most of them were 16 (11 people), there was also a couple of 17 year olds (9 people) who had participated but there was no 18 year olds that was given this survey.

2.
My chart shows to me that I have given out my survey to more girls than boys therefore this magazine will probably be more appealing to girls. I should have considered and gave out my survey equally: 10 to boys and 10 girls, however I will probably create a magazine not appealing to gender but appealing to age groups.

3.
According to my Pie chart most people had said that they had got their music magazine from shops. A few had said that they were subscripted to magazines and only a minimum had said they got their magazines from the internet.

4.
This chart shows to me that majority of people had wanted games to be involved within the magazine; only one out of a possible twenty didn’t want games included in the magazine.
5.
According to my result chart it shows to me that generally people want the magazine to involve both sorts of language so that it is understandable to all people when reading this magazine. However from the two more people had chosen the magazine to be more modern so that it interacts with them more.

6.
This result bar chart shows to me that the people who had taken this survey clearly state they are mostly interested in RnB, Bashment, Funky house and other types of music.
7.
According to my results it clearly shows that people are most interested to see new comers being interviewed that already well know celebrities. Only a small percentage chose both.

8.
This chart shows me that everyone who had taken my survey feels that they should be getting samples along with the magazine purchased.

9.
This show to me that most people are willing to pay for the magazine at a price range of 50p-£1.00 the next favourite choice is the magazine at price £1.50-£2.00 only five out of twenty chose this option and the rest of the prices was not chosen.
10.

This was my last question and my results show to me that when a magazine is looked at he most appealing thing to them are images that are used.
11.

This result has shown me that more people said yes to have a comment box at the end of the magazine so that suggestions can be given on things such as who should be interviewed next. Only seven out of twenty said no.
Conclusion

After doing a pie chart for each of my questions that was asked in the questionnaire it had gave me a good idea on what is required in music magazine for people to be appealed to and people would pick it up to read. These results had told me that the magazine that I am about to create should be targeted at more of a younger age group therefore by creating a magazine more suitable for the younger age I don’t have to specifically target it at a specific gender. Also my results have told me if i sell my magazine in a store at a price of 50p-£1.00 my magazine will be sold more. Also when creating my magazine I must include games as it was stated that people would like to see games in the magazines. Also the language used should be more modern so that it interacts more with my target audience. Finally people had said images attract more and that they will love to see more rising stars being interviewed along with a page on the internet were comments can be left for suggestions.

Textual Analysis of a music magazine (Double spread)

Textual Analysis of a music magazine double spread

This is the double spread that I have chosen to analysis. When first looked at the things that attract readers first is the large image of an American rapper. This already gives the image to readers that this magazine mostly surrounds the world of ‘Hip Hop’. The smart thing about this chosen image is that because this is a ‘Hip Hop’ magazine they got a well known American rapper to pose for the magazine. The American rapper that is posing for this magazine is known as GZA, he is a much known rap artist in America. GZA comes from the American group Wu Tang Clan. In this section of the magazine the famous rapper is talking about being in the world of ‘Hip Hop’ music. Looking at this double spread the first impressions is that it is created for ages sort of in their teens such as 16-22 years old. It is targeted at these age groups because younger aged people normally know more about the ‘Hip Hop’ world; it is normally this age group that will be interested about these subjects.

The image used in this section is very large and takes up a whole page of this section. GZA is told to stand in a certain way and this way shows a sort of arrogance and sort of shows to the readers that he thinks a lot of himself. Also they made him have this serious look so that it makes him looks like he means business and it shows that he knows that he is at the top of his game. The clothing that he is told to wear is basic and it’s the sort of clothing that he will wear generally. GZA is wearing a large white top almost baggy, along with baggy trousers that are black and trainers that are familiar to the youths and younger adults. The reason why he sorts of wears baggy clothes because the American Rap culture generally involves big and baggy clothes. By making him wear these clothing’s it shows that he knows abut Rap and indicates to the reader that he knows what he is talking about. He is also put in front of a white background to make him stand out more.

Not only has the image showed the ‘Hip Hop’ culture there is also the text that comes along with the image. From the text to show even more that the magazine is directed at the younger age ‘slang’ words are used in the ext as the younger age are more familiar to this sort of language the phrase ‘he ain’t my boy’ this means that he is saying so someone that they are not he’s friend anymore. By having the language in this way it communicates with the younger age more as only the younger age knows what he is talking about, this gives a link to the artist to the reader. As the readers might read language that they are familiar with so it makes the reader understand what he is saying more. There is also a phrase in the text that shows that GZA is a very important person as it states ‘No the GZA, no Wu-Tang, what the text is trying to say is that if you know GZA you will know Wu-Tang, this shows that he is an important person in Wu-Tang. Other texts are also used to show once again how good GZA is such as in the text words such as ‘the best emcee’ and also ‘pure genius’. By using these phrases it shows the editor s trying to show how important he is, these phrases creates ideas to the readers that he is the best out there and no one can match up to him. By saying he is ‘the best emcee’ not only does it make him sound good and important it also helps the magazine as people will have the impression that this magazine can get a interview with ‘the best emcee’. The colours used in this magazine are very smart because as seen in the text basic colours such as black white and red is used. If the image and text is looked at carefully you would notice that the text matches what the artist is wearing. The artist is wearing a white t-shirt which matches with the white background also the black text used matches with his trousers and finally the red text matches the red bits on the artist’s trainers. The red text also shows he’s opinion and the main bits.

The text that is used in this magazine is very basic, but what the editor done that was very smart is that if the text is important or if the editor wants the reader to read a certain part first he/she would make the text in bold, larger font and also most probably the colour red so that it stands out to the audience and it is eye catching.
This sort of double page layout is very smart because it is an interview one side it fully focuses on the interview and one side theirs a large image of the artist that they are talking about and who they are interviewing. Therefore as soon as the image is seen the reader knows straight away who is being interviewed.

Textual Analysis of a music magazine (Front Cover)

Textual Analysis of a music magazine front cover

This is a textual analysis of a music magazine front cover.

When I first look at this front cover the first thing that catches my eye is the large image of a hip-hop/rap star. The denotation of this magazine are: the colours used for this front cover is really mixed as around the page when the masthead and cover lines are written a variety of colours are used and not just normally the basic colours. By having more colours it sort of brightens the magazine and makes it more appealing to readers. The shot used is a medium close-up shot this is because the image is taken of the head and stops at the shoulders of the person in the photograph. Behind the person is a very dull white background, it starts of white at the bottom and as it goes up the magazine to the masthead it changes to a sort of light greyish colour to sort of make the magazine a little more appealing then having just a plain white background.

In front of the background at the top is a masthead of Vibe and at the bottom of this masthead there are scatter cover lines around the page consist of colours of black, yellow, purple, grey and the colour that stands out the most red. Red is used on this front cover to show that the text written in red is the importance of this magazine. The text that is in red on this magazine is the important bits of the magazine and most of what the magazine consists of. As you see the masthead “Vibe” is in red this is because it is the magazines masthead, the other text that is in red is the name of the rap star Lil’Wayne. This is red because it shows to us that this magazine is focused on him and that there is important news about this artist.

A bar code is visible on the bottom left of the magazine.

Masthead: Vibe’s masthead is written in a large bold font type and put in a sort of bright red so that it stands out and appealing. The masthead can also be written in red so that it associates with the details on the magazine as on top of the masthead it talks about “Blood & Bullets: Is there a Cash Money curse?” in this text it says blood so the colour of the masthead may link with this text, by making the masthead red in creates a link with the masthead and the text written on the front cover. In that text the words “Blood & Bullets” and “Cash Money” is changed to a different colour that the rest of the text as it is changed to yellow while the rest is left black. The colour is changed because these are the key words in the text. It shows to me that the magazine is saying that the hip hop culture consists of people dying and people get shot. Also the words cash money is highlighted because this is the record company of star Lil’Wayne, this gives evidence that the magazine consists mostly about Lil’Wayne. But apart from only talking about Lil’Wayne it also talks about American programs as this is an American magazine. But this magazine doesn’t only consists of music it also includes other topics as it says “Does Hillary Clinton still matter” this shows that it also talks about political matters and not only music. Also next to the bar code there is a small advertisement of I-Tunes.

The Cover photograph is of Hip Hop/Rap star Lil’Wayne. He is posed in a certain angle and pointing at something. This is very smart to have him pointing as if the magazine is looked at it shows him pointing at the cover lines that say “I’m more afraid of life than death” this is smart because it is quoted of what he has said and it shows what he is trying to tell us. He has a very serious look in his face this shows to use that he means business and he is not joking, by having him like this is shows the seriousness and makes you want to believe what he says.

On the left hand corner of Lil’Wayne’s forehead it says “I Love Music” this shows to us that he is very dedicated to music as he got a tattoo to show how much he likes being in the music industry. In the image he is wearing a suit with a white shirt and black tie. The white shirt in this image is very bright by having the shirt shiny it attract the reader to look towards the shirt which then attracts them to his hand which is pointing at the text so it shows to the reader what he wants to say.

The clothing he is wearing is very strange because in the hip hop culture in doesn’t really consist of artists wearing suits, he should really be wearing baggie clothing and big chains to show the American hip hop culture. Wearing a suit shows the seriousness and it kind of explains the quote “I’m more afraid of life than death” this is because by having the suit it shows to that he could be going to a funeral as he is wearing a black tie and the quote says death. The suit emphasis the point of the quote to readers more by having him dressed in a suit and not hip hop clothing, the quote “I’m more afraid of life than death” shows to use that someone is about to come to their death or it can possibly be him that’s why he is dressed that he is going to a funeral with him pointing at the quote.
