This is my double spread for my music magazine. I choose to use this layout because it is easy to understand and easy to read. I had the idea of having a whole picture of the artist on one side then on the other side is text. Once again i was trying to use the colour co-ordinations of the bandana.

Final Music Magazine Contents Page

This is my contents page to my music magazine that i have created. This page shows what is going to be inside my magazine. I thought that this would be a good design to use for my magazine as it is very organised and easy to understand and read. On the contents page i added two pictures of my artist and made it bold who the artist was by having his name printed at the bottom of the page. Again for this content page i wanted to make it matching to the colours of the bandana.

This is my final frontcover design of my music magazine. I looked at my drafts and i thought that this was the most suitable design to use. The idea of this frontcover was that i tried to match up the artitsts bandana colours with the writing font so that it shows that it involves the artist on the frontcover.

After i had done my designs i had taken several photographs, so that when i design my magazine i can use these photographs on my front page, contents page and double spread page. In these pictures i had made my model to dress up in a sort of hip hop genre cothing so it projects to the audience that this magazine is talking about this sort of genre music. In order to give the impression i made my model wear a hoodie and also have a bandana across he's face. By doing this i was hoping to give the impression that he's someone who looks like he's in a gang and that he projects himself as a rap artist. For the props such as the hoodie and the bandana was provided by myself, as these props i had brought in for my model to wear. The position i made my model stand and the actions i told him to do, i got the idea from how rap artist '2 pac' use to show himself as someone who believes in god and at the same time rap's. There was no make-up used in the photographs that i had taken as only props were needed for my photograph.

These are my photographs taken by myself. The pictures was taken within a media classroom in my college.

In order for me to take my picture these are the following equipments that I had used:

· Canon Eos 400d Digital Camera

· Bowens Gemini Flash Unit with soft box

· Radio Trigger

Once my pictures were taken using the digital camera the photo was stored in a compact flash card so that I could use it to store onto my computer.When using the equipment I was under my teacher’s supervision for health and safety reasons.

These were my final 4 designs of my ideas of a double spread, and out of all the design the one i choose was my first design, i had choose this design because it is a classic design of a duble spread with a large image on one side and text on the other page.

As like my frontcover i hope to use a black background so all the pages match up.

Case Study: Publishing House

XXL Hip Hop magazine is a magazine that was created in 1997, this magazine was designed to compete with other Hip Hop magazine’s such as well known magazines: The source and Vibe. This magazine was created to target people who are interested in the hip-hop culture and targeted at teenagers and younger adult’s, as the artist that are talked about and language used (colloquial) suits modern and younger age groups. This major hip-hop magazine was created by magazine firm Harris Publications. Harris Publication is a large firm when it comes to publishing magazines. Harris publication is a magazine publisher which is located at New York. However this isn’t the only magazine that Harris Publication had published, Harris Publication’s are also the bosses behind other Hip-Hop magazines such as: King Magazine and Scratch Magazine. These magazines are all targeted at people involved in the hip-hop culture; these magazines are mostly appealing to the younger age group.

However Harris publication doesn’t only publish music magazines they also do other types of magazines such as there well known American basketball magazine SLAM Magazine. SLAM Magazine has been a magazine since 1994 attracting over 500,000 people worldwide who are interested in the magazine. The American magazine is one of the most well known magazines in America. Harris Publication had published this magazine to target those basketball lover’s who wants to know updates and news on their basketball teams or players.

As seen Harris publications targets different audience with different magazines, such as music and sport. However there is also music magazines however this is not a typical music magazine this is a unique Nigerian magazine which target those audience that want to know more about their root singers also artist used in this magazine are stars that are not known (not a celebrity). Harris also have their own outdoor magazines including several titles on hunting, fishing and firearms. These magazines are based on outdoor therefore those who are interested in these titles have a selection on what they want to read.

Harris publications also have its very own comic titles. In 1983 Harris acquired assets from well known comic making company Warren Publishing. The two comic magazines that was well known and was a hit was Creepy and Vampirella magazine. In order to publish these magazines Harris Publication needed a studio to publish these prints onto a magazine. So to save money and time Harris had their own studio which was called Harris’ Anarchy studio. Anarchy studio had been in control of imprinting and publishing comic magazines that had featured the characters Vampi and Xin.

Harris publications are a very big and money making company, the CEO and president of Harris Publication is Stanley Harris, the company was named after Stanley Harris indicating that the owner is him. The reason why Stanley has got so many different magazines with different genres on different magazines is to attract those who read magazines for specific reasons such as some people may read a magazine because they are interested in music or some people pay read a sport magazine because they are interested in football or basketball or any other sport. This applies with all the other magazines such as outdoor magazines these are designed for people who want to know more about outdoor activities. By having all these genres of magazines it helps Harris Publication maximise their profits and earnings as having a lots of magazines all targeting different audiences means that the public will have a wider selection and it will help Harris to gain money in different genre areas. If however Harris didn’t have all these different genre types they won’t be making as much money. E.g. if they only had a music magazine since there are so many music magazines people may not choose to select a Harris magazine howler because there are lots of genres if they don’t make money out of a music magazine they can make money out of a sports magazine.

Overall Harris Publication publishes a wide range of varieties of genres in the magazine industry and the reason of publishing so many magazines is to target different audiences which are interested in different genres. By targeting an all round audience this will mean that their magazines will get sold so that Harris Publishing will be making money.
